Example text

These fairly extensive notes, with a continual emphasis on eternal becoming, on das ewig Werdende, were often based on excerpts from Lange’s History of Materialism (Geschichte des Materialismus), on Kuno Fischer’s massive study of Kant’s philosophy, on Kant’s Critique of Judgment (Kritik der Urteilskraft), and on Schopenhauer’s writings, to which Nietzsche added his own reflections and arguments. We can here see that he had by now already rejected teleology, and he seems to have, to a large extent, adopted evolutionism and naturalism.

These major influences are visible in many concrete instances. His favorite author at this time, Friedrich Hölderlin, with his contempt for German philistines and love of Greek culture, was probably a stimulus for Nietzsche’s own self-development and view of himself; Nietzsche was also very fond of Byron and Shakespeare. 5 This school essay is, among all the texts he wrote before he became professor in Basel in 1869, the one that has received the most attention, and it has been used to illustrate Nietzsche’s maturity.

Many of the comments regarding this essay have, however, been based on a misunderstanding, for it was not a “free” essay by Nietzsche, much less a genuine letter, but was composed on a set theme, and Nietzsche excerpted almost all of his literary judgments directly from a work by William Neumann, his Moderne Klassiker: Deutsche Literaturgeschichte der neueren Zeit in Biographien, Kritiken und Proben: Friedrich Hölderlin (Cassel, 1853; 1859). If there is any originality in the essay, it is in the choice of poet and in the skillful scholarly comments.
