The very best half dolls came from Germany, with some knock-off dolls imported from Japan. The half dolls were made into pincushions, powder puff holders, whisk brushes, tea cozies, milk jug covers, and more. One interesting half-doll project, noticed in the old books, was a telephone screen; the phones of the day were thought to be very ugly and so a way to hide them was devised. Also popular were the bas relief, or flat back, heads about 2" in size. These “heads” were blended with ribbonwork flowers and used to decorate sachets, wall pockets, coat hangers, and evening purses.
