Yates visited the prison and was so horrified by what he found that he pardoned some of the survivors instantly. Again though, supporters of strict security rallied to Lynds’s support; he remained on duty and went on to other scandals. Finally, however, it all became too much, and Lynds was transferred out. It was not a bright day for American penology when he was charged with building a new state prison to be called Sing Sing.

Instead Burns was returned to the chain gang. Burns by then enjoyed considerable notoriety, but that was nothing compared to that earned by an act that no other prisoner had ever done: He escaped from the chain gang for a second time.
